Do you know what JLS were originally known as? What band was Harry Styles in before One Direction? Test your knowledge as Capital takes a look back into the history books at the origins of some of the most well-known names in music.
JLS, aka Jack The Lad Swing, were forced to alter their name when they auditioned for The X Factor because it was already in use. UFO, which stood for Unique Famous Outrageous, also won the prize for Best Unsigned Act at the Urban Music Awards.
The four original members of the group, Adam Levine, Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden and Ryan Dusick were friend at school together when they came up with the band Kara's Flowers - a name of a girl the band all shared a crush on. The group changed their name to Maroon 5 around the same time they recruited guitarist James Valentine and the rest is history.
Before finding fame with the Black Eyed Peas, the US star was one of three members of the all female group Wild Orchid. The trio were originally called NRG, made four albums together and enjoyed a career from 1991 up until 2003.
Before signing up for the X Factor back in 2010, the heartthrob was honing his craft as frontman of his teen band White Eskimo. The group would perform covers from artists such as Bryan Adams and Paolo Nutini and performed at weddings and friends' parties.
Beyonce, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams spent the early days of their careers under the name Girls Tyme. The group originally began with six members and lost a national talent show before their success began. When Bey's father took over the group, he whittled the numbers down to four and went through named changes such as Something Fresh, Cliché, the Dolls, and Destiny before deciding upon their final name in 1996.
Chris Martin and Johnny Buckland created the group when they met at University College London and they started life under the name Pectoralz before recruiting Guy Berryman and Will Champion and performing as Starfish. It was shortly before releasing their debut EP 'Safety' when they changed to Coldplay and became one of the most successful British bands of all time.
In keeping with the arctic theme, Gary Lightbody and co released a three-track EP under the name Polar Bear, after initially changing their name from Shrug. They soon became Snow Patrol after realising of another group in the US of the same name.
The band's name stems from Florence Welch's early days performing with the band's keyboardist Isabella "Machine" Summers - it was here where the pair perfumed under the name Florence Robot/Isa Machine. The name was changed to its familiar entity as they believed it to be to clumsy and they recruited the rest of the group.
Before the days of 'Poker Face' and 'Just Dance', there was a New York girl touring the city with a group of friends from NYU under the name the Stefani Germanotta Band and performed original material as well as classic rock covers.
The four-piece went on to win the last series of The X Factor but had to change their name Rhythmix as it conflicted with a Brighton based charity.
The Camden based trio performed under the name Lickle Rinsers Crew when they first started gaining recognition before changing to NW1 and also had to disregard the name Hakuna Matata due to copyright issues with Disney.
Bandmates Mark and Danny struck up a friendship and partnership in the band Mytown and moved across to Canada and the US before heading back to Dublin and creating The Script wiht drummer Glen Power.
The current X Factor judge rose to fame when she won the US version of Popstars and formed the girl group Eden's Crush. Will.i.am actually wanted to get the star on board for the Black Eyed Peas before Fergie signed up, but due to her commitments with Eden's Crush - she was forced to decline. She then went on to front the Pussycat Dolls before going solo.
If it wasn't for LMFAO's grandmother, they would have been known by the provocatively titled Sexe Dude. Luckily, their smash hit 'Sexy And I Know It' provided enough proof that they continue to live by their original name.
It was during the eight grade in high school when Will met fellow rapper Allan Pineda, best known as Apl.de.ap and a further friend to form the backbone of what would become Black Eyed Peas. During his early daysthe Voice coach was known by the name Will 1X. in 2009, as he started the process of entering into a solo career, the technology whiz recorded music under the pseudonym Zuper Blahq. In case you were wondering, his real name is William James Adams.
The British rapper began his musical career as part of the group Aftershock Hooligans and recorded hundreds of songs with the collective. He left to pursue greater musical aspirations and has become one of the most important artists of his generation.
Alongside six other teen singers, the future Saturdays stars were the mini-me version of the popular pop group S Club 7 and went on to have success with songs such as 'Puppy Love' and 'One Step Closer'.
The Wanted and Lawson stars remain great friends to this day after performing in the band Avenue, who auditioned for the 2006 series of The X Factor but were kicked off the show for having professional representatives.
