Doja Cat's father is Dumisani Dlamini, an actor, composer and film producer best known for 1992 South African film Sarafina!, which stars Whoopi Goldberg. Doja Cat is Jewish through her mother, Deborah Sawyer, who is an American graphic designer of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage. Doja Cat is biracial. Her father, Dumisani Dlamini, is South African and Black, and her mother, Deborah Elizabeth Sawyer, is Jewish-American and white. While addressing past offensive comments made online, Doja opened up about her racial identity, saying: "I am a Black woman. Doja Cat confirmed that she had split from musician Johnny Utah in an Instagram Live video in Feb 2020. The couple started dating in 2019 and the break up appears to have been amicable. "Everything is ok. I unfollowed my ex-boyfriend and everything is ok. We have been cool," she said in the Instagram Live. "Nothing weird going on. No drama, or weird shit going on. Doja Cat has been outspoken about speculative conversation surrounding whether or not she has had cosmetic surgery. In March 2022, she clapped back at YouTuber Lorry Hill misleading and false claims that she had got plastic surgery. Later, in November 2022, Doja confirmed that she set to undergo surgery to have her “titties pulled up cuz some of my tops don’t fit the way I want them to.” In a 2018 interview with Vlad TV, Doja also said that she had been shamed for her natural body before.
In January 2020, Doja Cat released 'Boss Bitch', the third single from the soundtrack for 2020 movie Birds of Prey. The track was written by Doja and Ashnikko with producers Sky Adams and Imad Royal. Doja Cat signed to controversial songwriter Dr Luke's (real name Lukasz Sebastian Gottwald) Kemosabe Records when she was just 17. Dr Luke (who is no longer CEO of Kemosabe Records) was accused of sexual assault and abuse by singer Kesha, however, the case was dismissed. Despite being shunned by many artists, he has produced songs for Doja Cat like her hits 'Juicy', 'Say So', and 'Rules'. [Kemosabe]
'Say So' was the fifth single from Doja Cat's second album Hot Pink. The song spawned a number of TikTok dance challenges – the biggest created by Haley Sharpe a.k.a. @yodellinghaley – and became a massive hit. Doja Cat received backlash in September 2018 for her use of homophobic slurs towards rappers Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler the Creator. The tweets dated back to 2015 when Doja was in high school. Her response earned her even more backlash, as she tweeted: "Does saying f****t mean you hate gay people? I don't think I hate gay people. Gay is ok." In July 2020, Doja Cat contracted coronavirus after referring to those scared of it as 'p*ssy'. In an interview with Capital Xtra she said: “I got COVID. Honestly, I don’t know how this happens but I guess I ordered something off of Postmates and… I don’t know how I got it but I got it." She was previously slammed for saying, "I’m gonna get corona and then I’m gonna get a Corona, cause I don’t give a f*ck about corona, bitch. It’s a flu."
Doja Cat has openly dated men, but she has also said that she is gay in the past. In an Instagram Live video from August 2019, Doja opened up about her sexuality. She said: "I like both. I like dicks and I also like, um, I like people that I can have sex with. You can kind of have sex with anybody, right?" Doja Cat was accused of doing cocaine after she shared an Instagram Live video where she appeared to be slurring and wiping her nose. Back in July 2022, Doja Cat called out Stranger Things actor Noah Schnapp after he shared private DMs she sent him asking if Joseph Quinn had a girlfriend. On Instagram Live, Doja addressed the situation, saying: "The fact that Noah did that, like went and posted a private conversation between me and him, is so unbelievably socially unaware and whack.” The pair later settled the situation in private and Noah apologised to her. Doja Cat had a hit on her hands when she released ‘Vegas’ from the Elvis soundtrack, but due to the fact that the song interpolates Elvis Presley’s ’Hound Dog’, it was unfortunately not eligible for Oscar consideration. Doja Cat has revealed that she would be retiring from the music industry. The whole thing stemmed from an issue Doja had with her fans in Paraguay in March. Doja had planned to perform at the Asunciónico festival but it was cancelled due to extreme weather conditions. Doja Cat got into it with her fans on Twitter and following backlash, she decided to quit music.
