Robert Pattinson fans and critics cannot believe how unrecognisable he sounds in Studio Ghibli's The Boy and the Heron.

There's no denying that Robert Pattinson is one of the most beloved actors of his generation. Whether he's starring in huge franchises like Twilight and The Batman or flexing his acting chops in smaller projects like The Lighthouse and The Devil All the Time, people can't get enough of the British star. He also has a habit of being hilariously chaotic in his interviews.

Now, Robert is shocking people with his first voice acting role and it's all because of how different he sounds in the film.

The Boy and the Heron is Studio Ghibli's latest film. It came out in Japan in July 2023 and it was released in US cinemas last Friday (Dec 8). The film tells the story of a young boy who loses his mother and, while grappling with grief, enters a magical world where he befriends a talking heron.

In the English dub of The Boy and the Heron, Robert plays the role of the heron and it's safe to say that he's created a new voice for the role. Instead of his usual voice, Robert speaks with a gravelly, terrifying tone and people are losing it over his performance.

Reacting to Robert's voice on Twitter, one person wrote: "Robert Pattinson’s performance is literally the reason why Voice Acting should be considered as the category at the Oscars."

Another added: "I can't stop thinking about Robert Pattinson's incredible voice performance in The Boy and the Heron. I need to see the footage of him recording in the booth."

Someone also said: "Robert Pattinson is gleefully unhinged, one of the year’s best voice actors and arguably his best performance to date."

Fans have since pointed out that Robert's delivery is reminiscent of Masaki Suda's. Masaki plays the role of the heron in the original Japanese version of the film.

The Boy and the Heron's voice director Michael Sinterniklaas recently told IndieWire that he had doubts about whether or not Robert could pull off the role. he said: "When Pattinson’s name came up, I thought he’s a fine actor but there was nothing in his body of work to indicate that he could do this crazy thing." However, Robert proved him wrong.

Michael explained: "When he came to our studio in L.A., he was like ‘OK, I’ve been thinking about this role and I recorded some stuff. Do you want to hear it?’ And he whips out his iPhone and plays some stuff that he’s just been doing in the Memos app and it was already the voice. I was like, ‘Oh, bingo, you’ve already got the character.”

To hear Robert's performance in full, you can watch The Boy and the Heron in cinemas now.

What do you think? Could you recognise Rob's voice?
