During Ariana Grande's Pittsburgh Sweetener tour stop, the singer got emotional while singing the lyric about Mac Miller in "thank u, next".
Ariana Grande got emotional during a Sweetener Tour stop in Mac Miller's hometown of Pittsburgh this week. A video of the singer crying while performing "thank u, next" was posted on social media by Twitter user @promisememarais.
In the video, Ariana gets choked up when she reaches the lyric: "wish I could say thank you to Malcolm, cuz he was an angel".
Pittsburgh loves you so so much. super grateful I was able to be here for this moment. Mac is always with us and shining over you every night💜

Ariana was crying during thank u next yesterday in Pittsburgh, the hometown of Mac Miller...Ariana really had a Mac Miller playlist for the music before the show and she had an empty seat reserved for him...she’s so strong ðŸ˜ðŸ’”#ArianaGrande pic.twitter.com/5PB2jZzdXd

The lyric is about Mac Miller who tragically died last year at the age of 26 from an accidental overdose. Mac Miller was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and returned often to his hometown. During their relationship, Ariana and Mac were even spotted at Pittsburgh Steelers NFL games.
At the recent show, the crowd helped Ari recover by singing the parts that she was too emotional to sing. Ariana eventually got herself together and continued with the song.
This isn't the first time Ari has gotten choked up while singing about Mac. In March, the singer apologised for getting emotional on stage during the exact same part of "thank u, next".
"Thanks for accepting my humanness. it’s super emo and difficult singing some of these songs," Ari wrote on Twitter.
"thank u, next" has proven to be one of Ariana's more emotional hits.
In Ariana's first ever televised performance of the song, during an Ellen Show appearance, the pop star also got choked up while singing about her parents' relationship.
"One day I'll walk down the aisle, holding hands with my mama. I'll be thanking my dad, cuz she grew from the drama." Ari quickly recovered during the performance, which is perhaps one of her most heartfelt and endearing TV appearances ever.
