There's A Chance That Harry Potter's Aunt Petunia Was Actually A Witch

Aunt Petunia Harry Potter

Minds = blown.

We’re all about Harry Potter fan theories.

Mainly because it gives us the perfect excuse to rewatch every single film back to back.

That’s considered a productive day, right?

One fan has taken to Tumblr and provided us with the most mind blowing theory to date… that Harry’s Aunt Petunia is actually a witch.

CAN’T. COPE.

This theory first came about way back in 2004 before JK Rowling had even finished writing the books. At the Edinburgh Book Festival, a fan asked the author if Aunt Petunia was a Squib.

Squib: Also known as a wizard-born, is a non-magical person who is born to at least one magical parent.

This question was slightly rogue in itself due to the fact that readers at this point literally had no idea about her involvement in Lily and Snape’s relationship or her desperate plea to Dumbledore to admit her to Hogwarts.

Nonetheless, JK Rowling replied:

“Good question. No, she is not, but… No, she is not a Squib. She is a Muggle, but… You will have to read the other books. You might have got the impression that there is a little bit more to Aunt Petunia than meets the eye, and you will find out what it is. She is not a suit, although that is a very good guess. Oh, I am giving a lot away here. I am being shockingly indiscreet”.

Erm, no, you’re actually being SO DISCREET BECAUSE WE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IS GOING ON.

All we’re left with in the books is a slightly ominous closing sentence to say goodbye:

“Aunt Petunia, whose face had been buried in her handkerchief, looked around at the sound. She did not seem to have expected to find herself alone with Harry. Hastily stowing her wet handkerchief into her pocket, she said, “Well - good-bye”, and marched towards the door without look at him.

“Good-bye”, said Harry.

She stopped and looked back. For a moment Harry had the strangest feeling that she wanted to say something to him. She gave him an odd, tremulous look and seemed to teeter on the edge of speech, but then, with a little jerk of her head, she bustled out of the room after her husband and son”.

WHAT DID SHE WANT TO SAY?! SOMEONE TELL US. WE HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS.

The original GIF set explored what may have happened had Harry and Aunt Petunia met up after The War and she admitted to being ‘like him’.

For instance, in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Marge starts calling Harry’s Mum a ‘bad egg’ and mocking the Potter family, which results in a glass shattering in her hand.

Harry has presumed that he was the reason for the glass breaking because he was so angry, but maybe it was Petunia after all!

But let’s break it down for a minute:

  • Petunia was proud. She wouldn’t have sacrificed that pride in writing a letter to Dumbledore and begging him to admit her to Hogwart’s unless she believed that she had some form of magic in her.
  • Perhaps she is a Grade A b***h in the Muggle world because she as overcompensating for not being enough to get into the wizarding school.
  • It also explains how she knew what “Dementors” and “Azkaban” were despite very little contact with her sister… or Harry. It’s also how she knew that the Howler was intended for her before it had even been opened and maybe it’ll lend merit to why she seemed so determined to punish Harry for his magical outbursts.

Plus, who remembers this deleted scene from the movie?!

So now for the serious question: who’s starting the Twitter campaign to find out if this theory is true or not?
