The boy band singer says they often miss the experience of starring on the ITV1 reality show.
One Direction's Liam Payne has admitted the band miss being on The X Factor and wish they had made more of an effort to enjoy the experience.
The 'Gotta Be You' singers finished third on the ITV1 show's 2010 series and Liam says they often let the weekly stress of competing get in the way of having fun.
"We miss it a bit really and we didn't enjoy it as much as we should have," Liam Payne told Capital's showbiz reporter Kevin Hughes. "Some weeks you were a little bit stressed out about everything that's going on.
"Everyone feels that because it's such a pressureful show."
Liam advised the current crop of contestants on The X Factor to enjoy their time on the show and not let it get them too stressed.
"You've always got to have fun because this is like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Liam explained. "You'll never get to do it again."
One Direction's Harry Styles also discussed the band being asked to feature on this year's charity single, a cover of Rose Royce's 'Wishing On A Star', describing the opportunity as an "honour".
"We weren't expecting it at all so it was a bit of a surprise. For us to be asked to be on a charity single is a huge honour so it's nice of them to ask us."
The 'What Makes You Beautiful' singers launched their first album 'Up All Night' this week and have also recently signed to US label Columbia Records in a bid to crack America.
This year's X Factor charity single "Wishing On A Star", featuring One Direction, JLS and this year's 15 contestants, will be released on 27th November.
