Did Tom Holland retire from the role of Peter Parker? Will he be replaced? Here's everything we know about how many more solo Spider-Man films Tom will be in...

IMPORTANT QUESTION ALERT: If Spider-Man leaves the MCU, will Tom Holland still be Peter Parker or not?

On Tuesday (Aug 20), reports emerged that Disney/Marvel and Sony had reached a stalemate in financial negotiations over the Spider-Man franchise. According to Deadline, Marvel and Disney are set to part ways with Spider-Man "because of an inability by Disney and Sony Pictures to reach new terms that would have given the former a co-financing stake going forward."

While a new statement from Sony has said they "hope this might change in the future," it's looking likely that Tom Holland's Spider-Man will say goodbye to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

But what does that mean for Tom Holland? Will he still be Spider-Man? Here's what we know so far...

First of all, just because Spider-Man might be leaving the MCU doesn't mean Tom Holland has quit - or been fired - from the role of Peter Parker. As of right now, Tom Holland is still Spider-Man.

Tom is reportedly set to appear in at least one more solo Spider-Man film. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in 2017, Tom revealed that he had signed on to three Spider-Man solo movies and three appearances in other MCU films. He's already completed two of those solo films as well as appearing in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. It's unknown if his contract was extended following the success of Homecoming and Far From Home.

Far From Home set up a huge plot twist ahead of Tom's third solo outing as Peter Parker but if Spider-Man leaves the MCU, it's unclear what will happen or if that will even go ahead as planned.

If Disney/Marvel and Sony fail to come to an agreement, Peter Parker's involvement with the Avengers and his role in keeping Tony Stark's legacy alive will likely come to an end because all of those characters are Marvel property, not Sony.

It could also mean that any further films starring Tom as Spidey could take place in a different universe altogether - mainly because his currently storyline was so entwined with the MCU narrative. No MCU characters will feature in any future Spider-Man films either. (Of course, all of that could change if Disney and Sony come to an agreement...)

Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon and director Jon Watts have yet comment on the situation.

Jeremy Renner, who plays Hawkeye, reacted to the news on Instagram, writing: “Hey @sonypictures, we want Spider-Man back to @therealstanlee and @marvel please, thank you #congrats #spidermanrocks #please.”
