One of Netflix's break out hits is making a big impression on young audiences.
If you recently enjoyed Netflix's The Kissing Booth, you might be surprised to know that the teen dramedy has actually been one of Netflix's most successful releases this year. That's right, it's not just the story of a girl turning her best friend's brother into her boyfriend. It's actually a bona fide hit according to Netflix bosses.
Deadine reports that, during an appearance at The Paley Center for Media, Netflix's chief content officer Ted Sarandos, revealed that he believed The Kissing Booth was "one of the most-watched movies in the country, and maybe in the world right now". Whoa, big mood.
Don't count on Netflix to release viewing figures for the film but, based on the confidence of Sarandos' statement, we're guessing a whole lot of people have seen The Kissing Booth.
At present, The Kissing Booth is the 9th most popular film on IMDb, down from a very lofty 5th place position. With a rating of 6.5, The Kissing Booth is the only Netflix original among the top 10 most popular films on the site. Other films currently dominating IMDb's most popular film section include huge blockbusters like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Deadpool 2, and Hereditary.
The movie, which was shot in South Africa, stars Joey King (Elle), Joel Courtney (Lee), and Jacob Elordi (Noah) in his first big role. The film was based on a Wattpad novel of the same name by author Beth Reekles and has resonated strongly with its intended teen audience (though, perhaps less so with adult film critics).
Beth Reekles responded to The Kissing Booth's unprecedented popularity with an excited tweet. "No big deal but Ted Sarandos of Netflix said that The Kissing Booth is 'one of the most watched movies in the world right now' and excuse me while I find some champagne to pop."
So, the question now looms. Will Netflix make a sequel to The Kissing Booth? It's clear that Netflix are pleased with how well the film has done, so never say never.
