I mean, this would have been A THRILL RIDE.
We all know that Riverdale and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina TV series' are practically sisters. Both have their origins in the iconic Archie comics and both can boast of having Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (RAS) as a showrunner. So, it's only natural that, ever since the Sabrina series on Netflix was announced, fans have speculated about the possibility of a Sabrina/Riverdale crossover.
While this has always been dismissed (mainly because of the hyper magical nature of Sabrina's story and the mortal nature of Riverdale), RAS recently spilled the beans on just how close we all were to a SEASON ONE Sabrina/Riverdale crossover.
In an interview with EW, RAS actually revealed that the idea of Sabrina coming to town at the end of season one was floated.
“During season 1 of Riverdale — before Riverdale exploded and found its footing as sort of a noir, crime, pulp show — we had said, ‘Maybe season 2 will be like Afterlife With Archie. We’ll do a big genre switch and it will be horror, and it will be Afterlife and Sabrina could come and be the antagonist," RAS explained to the publication.
“There was even a time when we talked about the season 1 cliffhanger being the arrival of Sabrina.”
Eventually, they dropped that idea, as Riverdale found its footing as a teen crime drama, which would have made a witchy crossover a hard sell.
Riverdale fans might remember all the way back in 2017 when it was heavily speculated but unconfirmed that Sabrina would make an appearance in the show's first season finale.
This obviously didn't happen. Eagle eyed reddit fans did, however, spot FP reading a 'Chilling Adventures In Sorcery As Told By Sabrina' comic while he was in jail. One of the many easter eggs Riverdale writers are fond of hiding.
While this could have been an interesting twist, we're inclined to agree that Riverdale shines as a strictly human teen crime drama. However, we're willing to bet that the town of Riverdale might be name checked once or twice in the new Sabrina series as, canonically, Greendale and Riverdale are only across the river from each other.
