Gina Rodriguez hinted that this was coming, but Brad Silberling confirmed our worst fears
Back in March, Gina Rodriguez, star of Jane the Virgin, let slip that the show would be ending after its fifth season. She called directing an episode of the show an “incredible experience”, adding that she wanted to do more of it “next year – in our final season”.
While the show’s ratings have been declining, it’s still got a dedicated viewership – and for the most part, everyone is in agreement that it’s not exactly a bad idea to end on a high.
While fans were hoping it wasn’t true that the beloved show was ending, executive producer Brad Silberling has now confirmed their fears. In talks about his upcoming film, Silberling touched on Jane the Virgin, saying, “Yes, we are heading into the final season. It is a wonderful final season of the show…this will only make real sense when you have seen the content of the fifth season of the show. It is exactly as it was laid out”.
He added that it isn’t exactly a surprise for the show to end now, “We’ve always known when it was going to end. It will be 100 episodes when it’s done and 100 is exactly where Jennie always hoped it could end the story. So it’s perfect.”
Additionally, Silberling called the final season “bittersweet but perfect” and the show “one of the smartest on television”, adding “I go back to the season opener ever year just to kick everyone in the ass and it’s just a pleasure… It basically assumes the intelligence of its audience. And that’s the reason why I love it. It definitely expects you to be an intelligent participant.”
This is sad news for Jane fans, but don’t panic yet – you’ve still got a whole other season and the season four finale (April 20th) to go!
