Every death in Avengers: Endgame and a guide as to who's left the MCU...
WARNING: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS KEY AVENGERS: ENDGAME SPOILERS
Avengers: Endgame is finally here and audiences are literally sobbing over who dies in the critically-acclaimed Marvel film.
The sound in the Avengers: Endgame post-credits scene has a really poignant meaning
Ever since Avengers: Infinity War came out, viewers have been eager to find out what's next. Infinity War saw Thanos collect all six of the infinity stones and murder half of the population of the universe with the literal snap of a finger. In doing so, he killed Spider-Man, Black Panther and Nick Fury, among others. Avengers: Endgame focuses on the remaining Avengers as they attempt to undo Thanos' actions. Who dies, who lives and which actors have left the MCU for good?
The good news is that the Avengers do bring back everyone who died in the snap. With a bit of help from Ant-Man, Iron Man works out how to create a time machine five years after the snap and the Avengers stop Thanos from ever collecting all six infinity stones. While Loki, Heimdall and Vision are all gone for good, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Nick Fury, Bucky Barnes, Groot, Falcon, Mantis, Drax, Quill, Dr. Strange, Wanda Maximoff, Star-Lord and the Wasp are all alive again.
That being said, when 2023 Nebula goes to 2014 to steal the Power stone before Star-Lord, 2014 Nebula sees the memories of her 2023 self. She and Thanos then work out that the Avengers are using a time machine to stop Thanos from getting the Infinity Stones. Thanos then finds 2023 Nebula and switches her with 2014 Nebula so that 2014 Nebula may travel to the future and use Iron-Man's time machine to transport Thanos and his army into 2023.
In doing so, 2014 Gamora (who is with Thanos and his army) comes back and, while she never regains the memories of her dead 2018 self, she does live. The Avengers also stop Thanos but a couple of people tragically die in the process of saving the universe. So without further ado, here is a guide to everyone who dies in Avengers: Endgame and whether or not the actors who play them will ever return to the MCU.
Yes. In what is, arguably, the most heartbreaking death in MCU history, Tony Stark sacrifices himself to save the world. Despite being incapable of wearing the infinity gauntlet without dying, Tony steals it from Thanos and puts it on so that he can disintegrate Thanos and his army. He dies in Pepper's arms. This is made all the more heartbreaking by the fact that Tony and Pepper had a daughter together in the five year gap.
It's unlikely that Robert Downey Jr. will ever reprise the role of Tony Stark in any future Marvel film unless it's in a flashback.
No. Although Captain America does have a bittersweet ending in the film. After Tony Stark's funeral, he goes back in time to return all of the infinity stones to their original places in time. However, instead of returning, he chooses to live out his life in the past as Steve Rogers. He reunites with Peggy Carter and marries her. He then returns to the Avengers as an old man and gives Sam Wilson (Falcon) his shield.
It's unlikely that Chris Evans will ever star as Captain America in a Marvel film again unless they explore his life with Peggy.
Yes. In another act of self-sacrifice, Black Widow dies in Endgame. Hawkeye and Black Widow both travel to Vormir in 2014 to get the Soul Stone. However, like in Infinity War, it can only be retrieved via the sacrifice of a loved one. Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff fight over who dies but Black Widow ultimately jumps to her death.
A Black Widow film with Scarlett Johanssen is already in the works. Given the events of Endgame, it will likely be a prequel.
Yes and no. When 2014 Nebula brings Thanos and his army into the future, she brings 2023 Nebula with him. 2023 Nebula then shoots 2014 Nebula during the battle with Thanos. 2014 Nebula dies but 2023 Nebula survives (this may sound a bit confusing but the movie doesn't abide by other rules of time travel in cinema).
Karen Gillan will almost definitely play Nebula again in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 which is set to go into production in 2021.
Yes. As we've explained above, Tony kills him in the most soul-destroying but brilliant way.
It seems likely that Josh Brolin will never reprise the role of Thanos in a Marvel film again.
Mercifully everyone else survives. Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, War Machine, Ant-Man, Captain Marvel, Okoye, Valkyrie, Pepper, Rocket, Wong and "I love you 3000" icon Morgan Stark all live and will likely appear in future Marvel films. Many of the movies are already confirmed.
Marvel are currently in the process of creating: a Doctor Strange sequel, a Black Panther sequel and an Ant-Man and the Wasp sequel, as well as a Black Widow film and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. They are also making new films Blade, Shang-Chi and The Eternals as well as multiple series for Disney+.
Tom Holland will star as Spider-Man again in Spider Man: Far From Home this July.
