Taylor Swift's 'ME!' lyrics are filled with easter eggs that reference her previous songs...
Taylor Swift fans are losing it over the meaning of her 'ME!' lyrics and all of the references in the Brendon Urie duet.
Ever since Taylor Swift's Reputation Stadium Tour finished at the end of 2018, fans have been desperate to find out what she does next. Rumours about TS7 first began to circulate last year but they went into overdrive this month, when Taylor started to tease the date ('4.26') on Instagram. Today she released the first single from TS7 called 'ME!' and, not only is it a collaboration with Panic! at the Disco's Brendon, but it also features countless references to her previous singles.
'ME!' itself is a euphoric self-love anthem. Describing it in an interview with Robin Roberts, Taylor said: "ME!’ is a song about embracing your individuality and really celebrating it, and owning it. I think that with a pop song, we have the ability to get a melody stuck in people’s heads, and I want it to be one that makes them feel better about themselves." Lyrics like: "You can't spell "awesome" without "me"" spell out that message loud and clear.
However, this wouldn't be a Taylor Swift single if it didn't contain hidden clues and references to her huge back catalogue. It didn't take long before fans even noticed references to 'ME!' in previous songs. In 'End Game' on Reputation, Taylor literally sings "Reputation precedes 'ME!'". It could be a mere coincidence but, knowing Taylor, it's not and 'ME!' follows suit by containing multiple easter eggs.
So, without further ado, here are all of the references in 'ME!'.
INTRO: Taylor Swift
I promise that you'll never find another like me
VERSE 1: Taylor Swift
I know that I'm a handful, baby, uh
A reference to the public persona Taylor sings about in 'Blank Space': "I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream".
I know I never think before I jump
An ironic nod to the fact that Taylor sang "Don’t forget to look before you fall" on 'Fifteen' but doesn't follow her own advice. She also sang "Loving him is like trying to change your mind once you’re already flying through the free fall” in 'Red'.
And you're the kind of guy the ladies want
(And there's a lot of cool chicks out there)
The video features portraits of chickens wearing sunglasses. Taylor teased a photo of them the day before Easter.
I know that I went psycho on the phone
A reference to the iconic: "I’m sorry, the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now. Why? Oh, cause she’s dead!" line in 'Look What You Made Me Do'. It could allude to her infamous phone call with Kanye West. Taylor also sings "I’m pretty sure we almost broke up last night // I threw my phone across the room, at you" in 'Stay Stay Stay'.
I never leave well enough alone
And trouble's gonna follow where I go
Taylor alludes to her Red single 'I Knew You Were Trouble' here and how she has a habit of being unlucky in love. The line is also reminiscent of "I swear I don’t love the drama, it loves me" in 'End Game'.
(And there's a lot of cool chicks out there)
PRE-CHORUS: Taylor Swift
But one of these things is not like the others
Like a rainbow with all of the colors
Before 'ME!' dropped Taylor teased multiple rainbow related images on Instagram. Rainbows are symbolic of 'ME!' in that they represent individuality and diversity.
Baby doll, when it comes to a lover
I promise that you'll never find another like
CHORUS: Taylor Swift
Me-e-e, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
I'm the only one of me
Baby, that's the fun of me
Eeh-eeh-eeh, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
You're the only one of you
Baby, that's the fun of you
And I promise that nobody's gonna love you like me-e-e
VERSE 2: Brendon Urie and Taylor Swift
I know I tend to make it about me
I know you never get just what you see
But I will never bore you, baby
(And there's a lot of lame guys out there)
And when we had that fight out in the rain
Taylor is well known for her rain lyrics. This one reads as a flashback to "But I miss screaming and fighting and kissing in the rain" in 'That's The Way I Loved You' on Fearless. A classic.
You ran after me and called my name
I never wanna see you walk away
(And there's a lot of lame guys out there)
PRE-CHORUS: Taylor Swift and Brendon Urie
'Cause one of these things is not like the others
Livin' in winter, I am your summer
Baby doll, when it comes to a lover
I promise that you'll never find another like
CHORUS: Brendon Urie and Taylor Swift
Me-e-e, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
I'm the only one of me
Let me keep you company
Eeh-eeh-eeh, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
You're the only one of you
Baby, that's the fun of you
And I promise that nobody's gonna love you like me-e-e
BRIDGE: Brendon Urie and Taylor Swift
Hey, kids!
Spelling is fun!
Shortly after the release of the song Taylor retweeted a photo of her wearing a Garland Elementary Spelling Bee Champion” t-shirt.

Girl, there ain't no I in "team"
But you know there is a "me"
Strike the band up, 1, 2, 3
This one's a Panic! at the Disco reference. In 'I Constantly Thank God For Esteban' Brendon sings "Strike up the band! // Whoa-oh, the conductor is beckoning".
I promise that you'll never find another like me
Girl, there ain't no I in "team"
But you know there is a "me"
And you can't spell "awesome" without "me"
I promise that you'll never find another like
CHORUS: Taylor Swift and Brendon Urie
Me-e-e (Yeah), ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh (And I want ya, baby)
I'm the only one of me (I'm the only one of me)
Baby, that's the fun of me (Baby, that's the fun of me)
Eeh-eeh-eeh, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh (Oh)
You're the only one of you (Oh)
Baby, that's the fun of you
And I promise that nobody's gonna love you like me-e-e
