Netflix Cancels "13 Reasons Why" Premiere Event Following Deadly Santa Fe School Shooting

"In light of today’s tragedy, we are cancelling the 13 Reasons Why S2 premiere event tonight.”

The second season of the highly controversial teen drama 13 Reasons Why dropped on Netflix this past Friday (May 18). The streaming platform announced, however, that it would be cancelling the red carpet premiere of the show in light of Friday's Santa Fe High School shooting which left 10 confirmed dead and another 10 wounded.

In a statement Netflix said: "Our hearts are with the victims of the Santa Fe High School shooting, and with all victims of gun violence. In light of today’s tragedy, we are cancelling the 13 Reasons Why S2 premiere event tonight.”

For context, one character in 13 Reasons Why, Tyler Down, is seen in season 1 with a stockpile of guns. A student in the first season, Alex Standall, even tries to take his own life with a gun.

In season 2, the theme of guns is further explored and viewers see young students using weapons (supervised and unsupervised).

Actors in the drama spoke out against the gun violence after news had spread of the tragic school shooting.

Dylan Minnette and Alisha Boe both shared their heartfelt condolences to the victims of the horrific event.

To address some of the concerns of violence and graphic content, Netflix created a warning video and a message at the end of each episode directing viewers in crisis on how to seek help.
