NBC's 'This Is Us' returns for season 3 in September. The emotional family drama will undoubtedly offer up more of what made audiences fall in love with its unique brand of storytelling. So, when does 'This Is Us' return, who are the new cast members, and what major plot points will be explored in the upcoming season? Here's everything you need to know.
Fans of NBC's This Is Us are preparing for the third season of the emotional drama set to air at the end of September. With the end of season 2 giving fans some much needed clarity into Jack's cause of death, the third season of the tear jerking family drama will explore even more of the Pearson family's complex relationships.
NBC's Fall schedule has This Is Us returning for season 3 on Tuesday, September 25 at 9 pm.
UK audiences have a fairly long wait ahead, however. More4 in the UK only began airing season 2 in July 2018, meaning that viewers in the UK will likely be waiting for season 3 to air on their TVs well into 2019.
Expect an 18 episode run in season 3. Seasons 1 and 2 also had 18 episodes each.
Anyone worried that they'd seen the last of Jack Pearson on This Is Us can lay their concerns to rest. Milo Ventimiglia isn't going anywhere. Back in April, the actor who plays the departed patriarch revealed that part of Jack's season 3 arc would involve viewers learning more about his Vietnam war service.
“We’re definitely going to see Jack in the Vietnam era," he told PEOPLE magazine. The show's creator Dan Fogelman also alluded to Vietnam being a big part of where the story goes in season 3.
"We explore that younger Jack and what he experienced in war time," Milo explained on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. "And then on the positive side, we get to see Jack and Rebecca budding love."
See guys, you will get your Jack fix in season 3.
With lots of new stories to tell and much to explore, fans can expect some new faces to join the cast in season 3. Michael Angarano (Will & Grace) will play Nicky, Jack's brother. Nicky will be a huge part Jack's Vietnam storyline as the pair served together in the war.
Rob Morgan (Mudbound, Daredevil, Luke Cage) has also joined This Is Us season 3 as Solomon Brown, a local councilman who will likely play a significant part in a planned political arc for one of the characters.
While it is unclear which character might get into local politics, it has been heavily theorised that Randall will be the one.
As for the main cast, there have been no major departures announced ahead of season three. Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Sterling K Brown, Chrissy Metz, and Justin Hartley are all set to return as the main cast. Susan Kelechi Watson and Chris Sullivan will also return for season 3 on This Is Us.
Your guess is as good as ours. Despite there only being a few weeks left until the season premiere, a teaser/trailer for the series has not yet materialised.
There have been plenty of behind the scenes shots of the cast on set, however.
Season 2 ended on some pretty heavy notes. One of the mysteries that emerged at the season's close was the mystery of who Randall was talking about during the time jump when he told his daughter Tess that they had to go "see her". Fans now wonder whether a major character could be in danger or even ill.
Of course, we've also had some indications that there will be future time jumps in season 3 and Milo Ventimiglia has even indicated that there will be scenes of him with the grown up Big 3. Bust out the tissues because some alternate reality/dream Jack moments are on their way.
As we mentioned, Vietnam is a huge part of this season as is Jack's courtship of Rebecca and how the family deals with their huge loss now that we know exactly how he died.
Fans will also learn more about Toby and his origin story, something that will be key in understanding more about his struggle with depression.
