Umbrella Academy's Aidan Gallagher defends Hargreeves sibling romance on the show

Aidan Gallagher, who plays Number Five, has sparked another fan debate after suggesting Five and Vanya had a crush on each other.

One of the biggest things that fans of Netflix's The Umbrella Academy have debated about on the show is the somewhat (read: very) controversial relationship between Allison Hargreeves (Number 3) and Luther Hargreeves (Number 1).

If you haven't seen the show yet, here's the sitch: Allison and Luther are adopted siblings who also happen to be romantically involved. The storyline did not sit well with fans and some began questioning whether or not the series was "romanticising" incest. Biologically, Allison and Luther are not related (unless that theory about the siblings having the same alien dad is true) but the general consensus is that because they were adopted and raised as siblings, it should be off limits.

Anyway, it's been a while since Hargreeves Incestgate™ kicked off but now, Aidan Gallagher who plays Number Five, has reopened the debate after suggesting Five and Vanya (Ellen Page) may have had a crush on each other back in the day too. FIVE AND VANYA?! Oh child, please no.

If you follow Aidan on Twitter, you'll have probably seen him chatting to fans, diving deeper into the themes and storylines on the show, debunking theories and generally providing us all with more context into the lives of the Hargreeves siblings.

Quote-tweeting a fan made video about Five and Vanya a few days ago, Aidan hinted that the two siblings may have had a crush on each other back in the day before he went time travelling.

Uhhh, first of all, weird. Second of all, super weird. Third of all, *Delores has left the chat* and finally, what?!

Fans were quick to start asking questions and pulled Aidan up on the comment but he jumped back in with a pretty fair explanation as to why the Hargreeves kids seem to have a penchant for crushing on each other.

When one fan replied to his tweet saying "they are.....siblings," Aidan responded:

Hmmmmm, ok. He has a point. But it's still super weird.

Fans responded again, pointing out that yes, while it's true the Academy/Hargreeves treated them as "warriors in training," they still hold that familial bond. They were still raised as siblings, they still "call each other brother and sister" and that "co-ed boarding school students don’t call the staff mom and dad." (To be fair, Hargreeves was barely a father to them in the first place but still...)

After one fan replied pointing out that "the amount of times they refer to each other with familial labels disproves his entire statement," Aidan clarified what he said.

So, there you have it. Aidan's argument that the siblings were merely residents in a training facility and never quite had a normal loving childhood is right. With no one but a robot "mom", a monkey as their closest confidant and a "dad" who was more like a strict Headmaster than a loving father figure, they had to seek love elsewhere. Attachments were formed. And that's just the way the cookie crumbled.
