Watch the trailer for pandemic movie Songbird starring KJ Apa
A pandemic movie? In THIS economy?
The pandemic isn't even over yet but the first coronavirus movie is already here and ready for release. The devil works hard but Hollywood truly works harder.
The trailer for Songbird, starring Riverdale's KJ Apa, Sofia Carson, Demi Moore, Bradley Whitford, Alexandra Daddario and Jenna Ortega, has arrived and is set to be released at some point in the near future.
The thriller takes place in 2024, where COVID-23 (!!) is ravaging the world. Restrictions are stricter, people are being taken to 'quarantine camps', the worldwide death toll is over 110 million and everyone has been in lockdown for 4 years.
Basically, everyone's current real life nightmare in a movie.
Describing the plot to Entertainment Weekly, director Adam Mason said: "It's a dystopian, scary world, but it's a romantic movie about two people who want to be together, but they can't. It's Romeo and Juliet, but they're separated by her front door and by the virus."
The news of the film was first reported in July, and the entire thing was filmed within 17 days, following strict safety measures in Los Angeles. KJ plays Nico, a frontline delivery guy who is immune to the virus. Sofia Carson plays Sara, a girl who is trapped inside her apartment and cannot leave due to fear of being infected.
While some people are enjoying the trailer, criticism of the extremely bleak plot has already started on social media. Others are reacting to the trailer, and they're all saying the same thing:
- "Why?"
- "Who asked for this?"
- "Read the f*cking room"
- "What was the reason?"
- "Why the f*ck would they make this right now?"
You catch the drift...
Hey, you know, maybe don't do this. Maybe you don't need to tell this story right now. Maybe you don't need to spread some more bleakness. Maybe you don't need to profit from people's legitimate fear of pandemic during said pandemic. Maybe consider why you're doing this. Or stop. https://t.co/JyARNn5xr6

Michael Bay really made an apocalyptic movie about COVID-23 pic.twitter.com/ar01PU5dK3

Anticipating concerns from viewers about the grim subject material, Sofia Carson told EW: “Even though this is the pandemic thriller and it's suspenseful and terrifying, the heart of a story is hope. It’s the hope that is represented in Sara's character and the love between Sara and Nico. In our never-ending dark night, the songbird sings a song of hope.”
Songbird doesn't have a release date yet but... watch this space.
