Selena Gomez Reveals That '13RW' Is Supporting Two Suicide Prevention Charities

The second season of 13 Reasons Why comes out tomorrow. We cannot wait to find out what happens to Clay and the rest of the cast but we also cannot wait to hear its soundtrack. The LP stars contributions by everyone from Khalid and Billie Eilish to YUNGBLUD and Years and Years. It looks set to be one of the albums of the year and it drops at midnight tonight.

Not only that but the new record also contains an exclusive song by the show's executive producer and chart queen Selena Gomez. Selena released 'Back to You' as the lead single from the collection last week and it has already racked up over 13 million streams on Spotify alone. To make things even more exciting, Selena took to Twitter yesterday, to reveal that proceeds from the show's soundtrack will be donated to leading US charities: The Trevor Project and Crisis Text Line.

The Trevor Project is an organisation dedicated to LGBTQ+ youth and Crisis Text Line is a free 24/7 service that offers support to anyone in a crisis. Both do incredible suicide prevention work and considering that 13 Reasons Why directly addresses teen suicide and features a wide variety of queer characters, we could not think of better charities for it to support.

The first season of the popular TV adaptation sparked huge controversy because of its subject matter. Some viewers believed that it glorified suicide and rape, while others thought that it was important because it depicted realities that far too many teenagers face.

Going into Season 2, the cast and team have made a considerable effort to address the criticism that they have received and make changes to how 13 Reasons Why operates. The series now features a warning video that plays ahead of each season of the show and it also contains content warnings within each episode.

That's not all though. Netflix has also created an array of shorts in which they interview people who have experienced rape and/or suicidal thoughts and worked through their trauma. In doing so they are aiming to use their platform to help encourage people to speak up about their issues and work through them instead of turning to suicide.

Discussing the backlash to the first season of the show with Zane Lowe on Beats 1 recently, Selena said: "Comfort is the enemy of progress. I think when something makes that sort of noise, it's either two reasons: It's either so foul or it's amazing. And I think that's when you get people to wake up."

She then added: "This is real life. I've had numerous parents and kids come up to me [and say] how it's just opened the door for healthy communication, and that's all you want. You know, we're not going to end these certain things or try to break through it unless we take those risks."

Hopefully with all of the care and attention being put into the series right now, fans will be pleased and the wider reaction to the second season will be more positive.
