Henry Cavill Cast As Geralt In Netflix's Witcher TV Series

Superman himself will be taking on the title role in Netflix 'Witcher' series

Henry Cavill has confirmed that he will be taking the main role in Netflix's upcoming 'Witcher' TV series, based on the hugely popular book and video game series of the same name.

Cavill will be playing Geralt of Rivia, the eponymous 'witcher' - a kind of mercenary/pest control man who specialises in hunting nasty mythical creatures like werewolves and witches which plague the civilian population of a fantastical world.

Henry has some big boots to fill - Geralt is one of the most beloved characters in the gaming world. The actor confirmed his involvement in the project with a cheeky, not-so-subtle Instagram post:

What is 'The Witcher'?

The Witcher series started life as a series of books written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and released throughout the 1990s (though spinoffs followed later).

These books were then turned into video games by studio CD Projekt Red to great success. The most recent instalment in the video game series 'Witcher 3: Wild Hunt', is routinely regarded as one of, if not the, best game ever made. It currently sits with a rather comfortable rating of 92 (out of a possible 100) on review aggregation site Metacritic.

When is the Netflix series coming out?

There is currently no solid release date for the show, but it is tentatively coming out in 2019 or 2020.

The book series' author has expressed his enthusiasm for the new show, saying: "I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing... I’m excited about our efforts together, as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to life.”
