Packed with a cast of talented teenage newcomers and familiar faces alike, Heartstopper is a refreshing breath of fresh air when it comes to on-screen teen LGBTQ+ romance and representation. Joe Locke plays the role of Charlie Spring in Netflix’s Heartstopper. Year 10 student Charlie is a high-strung, overthinker who loves music and drumming. He becomes friends with Nick Nelson after sitting next to him in form, and the two end up falling for each other. Believe it or not, the role of Charlie is Joe Locke’s very first on-screen role. The 18-year-old landed the job after auditioning as part of an open casting call to find the perfect actor to bring Charlie Spring to life. [Netflix]
Kit Connor plays Nick Nelson is Netflix’s Heartstopper. Nick is a Year 11 rugby player who ends up falling for Charlie Spring. Viewers might recognise 18-year-old Kit from his recent role in Rocketman, where he played the older version of young Elton John. He’s also known for voicing Lyra's daemon Pan in BBC’s His Dark Materials series. Elsewhere on-screen, Kit has been in The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, Ready Player One, and CBBC’s Rocket’s Island as Archie Beckles. [Netflix]
Yasmin Finney plays Elle Argent in Netflix’s Heartstopper. Elle is one of Charlie Spring’s best friends from school. Elle is trans, and at the start of the show, we see that she’s moved from Truham Grammar School to Higgs School for Girls. 17-year-old Yasmin makes her on-screen debut in Heartstopper – and she’s already got some exciting projects ahead of her too. William Gao plays Tao Xu in Netflix's Heartstopper. Tao is one of Charlie’s best friends, along with Elle and Isaac. The role of Tao is actually William’s very first on-screen role. The actor landed the role of Tao after four rounds of an open audition. Landing a role on a huge Netflix series? Not bad for a 19-year-old, huh? [Netflix]
Tobie Donovan plays Isaac Henderson in Netflix’s Heartstopper. Book-lover Isaac is best friends with Charlie, Tao, and Elle. The character of Isaac was created specifically for the Netflix series – he doesn’t feature in Alice Oseman’s original graphic novel. Tobie himself is also a newcomer, making his debut in the series. Corinna Brown plays Tara Jones in Netflix’s Heartstopper. Tara is a student at Higgs alongside Darcy and Elle. The role of Tara is Corinna’s biggest role to date. She made her on-screen debut as Nashauna in My Murder, that also starred a young John Boyega. [Netflix]
Kizzy Edgell plays Darcy Olsson in Netflix’s Heartstopper. Darcy is a student at Higgs alongside Tara and Elle. Kizzy makes their on-screen debut as Darcy in Heartstopper. The 19-year-old, who is non-binary, is also studying Psychology at university, and was juggling their A-Levels at the same time they were filming Heartstopper. [Netflix]
Sebastian Croft plays Ben Hope in Netflix’s Heartstopper. Ben is one of Charlie’s classmates at Truham Grammar, and he’s one of the antagonists in the series. Viewers might have seen Sebastian Croft in a number of other projects, including Game of Thrones where he played a young Ned Stark. Sebastian also appeared in Doom Patrol (as Charles Rowland), Penny Dreadful (as Boy Familiar) and in Horrible Histories: The Movie - Rotten Romans, where he played Atti. [Netflix]
Cormac Hyde-Corrin plays Harry Greene in Netflix’s Heartstopper. Harry is a student at Truham Grammar School. He bullies Charlie and ends up butting heads with Nick over his treatment of Charlie. The role of Harry marks Cormac’s on-screen debut. [Netflix]
Rhea Norwood plays Imogen Heaney in Netflix’s Heartstopper. Imogen is a new character – she doesn’t actually appear in the graphic novels. Imogen fancies Nick, but it soon becomes clear that Nick has no interest in her romantically. Rhea Norwood is a newcomer, and Heartstopper is her TV debut. [Netflix]
Jenny Walser plays Tori Spring in Netflix’s Heartstopper. Tori is Charlie’s older sister, and the main subject of Alice Oseman’s ‘Solitaire’ graphic novels. Heartstopper is Jenny’s biggest project to date, after previously appearing in one episode of Call The Midwife in 2021. Jenny has also performed in numerous stage productions, too. Announcing Jenny’s casting on Twitter, Alice Osman wrote: “I knew we had to cast her from the moment she began her audition.” [Netflix]
Fisayo Akinade plays Mr Ajayi in Heartstopper. Mr Ajayi is the art teacher at Truham who Charlie confides in and opens up to about bullying. Elsewhere on screen, Fisayo Akinade has appeared in projects such as Banana, Cucumber, BBC’s Ordinary Lies and Silent Witness. He also played Markham in The Personal History of David Copperfield alongside Dev Patel, and is set to appear in Starz’s Dangerous Liaisons series as Chevalier de Saint-Jacques. Stephen Fry makes a small cameo as the familiar voice of Headmaster Barnes in Netflix’s Heartstopper. Barnes is not seen on screen in the series, but viewers will instantly recognise Fry’s voice as it booms out over the school’s speakers. Throughout his 40-year career, Stephen Fry has appeared in countless films and TV shows. His most recent TV roles include The Dropout, It’s A Sin, Sex Education and Doctor Who. No, your eyes do not deceive you… that really IS the Oscar-winning icon Olivia Colman. Olivia plays Nick’s mum Sarah Nelson. Obviously, you’ll have seen Olivia in multiple films and TV shows over the years. On TV, she’s best known for playing Queen Elizabeth in The Crown, and starring in Broadchurch, Peep Show, Fleabag and more. On film, she won an Oscar for The Favourite, and also starred in The Lost Daughter, The Father, Murder on the Orient Express. But you already knew that, right?
