Drew was born in Hickory, NC and grew up there, attending school, and eventually college at Western Carolina University, where he studied Theatre and English. Drew Starkey plays Sarah Cameron’s older brother, Rafe Cameron, in Outer Banks. Rafe is a Kook who often uses violence and his father’s clout to get his own way. He particularly hates the Pogues, the group that his sister Sarah now belongs. Drew won the role of Rafe after originally auditioning for John B. The casting directors immediately thought he’d be perfect to bring Rafe to life on-screen. [Netflix]
Before landing the role of Rafe Cameron in Outer Banks, Drew Starkey initially auditioned for the role of John B. Speaking to Pop Culturalist, Drew said: “I had auditioned for John B. I put it on tape and sent it in. Casting saw it and they were like, “He’s terrible for this part. He’s not it at all. But we have this other role that we think he might be right for.” He then landed the role, and was brought out to South Carolina where he began playing Rafe. [Netflix]
Drew Starkey stars opposite Daniel Craig in Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Queer’. The film takes place in 1940s Mexico City, with Daniel’s character – an outcast American expat – becoming infatuated with a younger man, played by Drew. Recalling the moment Guadagnino called him about taking on the role, he told Variety that it was an “insane” moment. He also confessed that he was starstruck when he met Daniel for the first time. Prior to his role on Outer Banks, Drew Starkey had several credits to his name. He started out in a series of short films, before appearing in TV shows including Mercy Street, Ozark, Brockmire, Good Behaviour (pictured), Doom Patrol, Queen Sugar and Scream: Ressurection. On the big screen, he appeared in American Animals, Love, Simon, The Hate U Give and The Devil All the Time. In 2022, he appeared in Hulu's Hellraiser reboot, The Other Zoey and The Terminal List. While they may play enemies in Outer Banks, Drew Starkey and Rudy Pankow are great friends in real life. They also both appearred in the short film, VIRGO, directed by Alyssa Toledo. The pair star as two musicians who end up being detained somewhere across the US/Mexico border. The short film includes Drew, Rudy and Elaine Siemek performing a song together.
