The role of Veronica could have gone to someone else at the last minute - and THAT would have been unacceptable.
I think we can ALL agree that Riverdale is one of the most perfectly casted shows of all time, right?! From Lili Reinhart as the iconic girl-next-door Betty Cooper and Camila Mendes as the fiery Veronica Lodge to KJ Apa and Cole Sprouse as the mis-matched BFFs Archie and Jughead, we'd be hard pressed to come up with any better re-casting suggestions. But did you know? Things could have been a lot different for Camila Mendes, judging by what she's just revealed about her audition process.
Speaking to W Magazine, Camila relayed what exactly went down in the audition before she was eventually cast as the iconic Veronica Lodge and let me tell ya, it sounds like a literal nightmare. Believe it or not, the role of Veronica almost went to someone else at the last minute for the wildest reason.
“I had the most harrowing audition process,” Mendes told W Magazine. “They were like, ‘You’re our top choice, but we want to open up a new search, and we want someone that can compete with you.’” A new search?! Someone who can compete?! Can you even imagine what that must feel like to be top choice and then they RE-OPEN the casting call?!
Camila reveals that she “lost sleep" and "was crying every night because it felt like [she] was so close to something that could be big, and like life and career changing."
But as we all now know, they weren't able to find anyone who could compete with Camila and it all worked out in the end. And the good sis has been out here dominating ever since.
The role of Veronica was also Camila's first on screen role. She had just graduated from NYU Tisch School of the Arts when she auditioned for the part and ended up securing the bag. Talk about living the dream.
