ABC's medical drama 'The Good Doctor' was a hit with audiences in the US and abroad. Audiences have loved Freddie Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy, but what can fans expect in season 2?
ABC's The Good Doctor has been a fairly surprising hit for the network. Despite being rejected twice by CBS, The Good Doctor pushed through to become one of the most-watched new shows of the season.
The show stars Freddie Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy, an incredibly gifted surgical resident at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital who happens to have savant autism. The Good Doctor sees Shaun handle the contours of his professional duties alongside the personal friendships and relationships he is cultivating in his new home of San Jose.
Now that the popular show is on hiatus, fans are wondering what season 2 has in store for the St. Bonaventure doctors.
Fans can breathe a sigh of relief. The Good Doctor has, indeed, been renewed for a second season. ABC announced that they planned on bringing back the popular show for a second season even before the season finale had aired.
At the time, ABC Entertainment president said, "The Good Doctor's message of inclusiveness resonates with our viewers and is a hallmark of what we aim to accomplish here at ABC."
Fans can attribute The Good Doctor's success to a brilliant young cast, the creative mind behind House, David Shore, and Daniel Dae Kim (Hawaii Five-O), who spearheaded the project and is its Executive Producer.

The Good Doctor is currently on hiatus but should resume production in late spring or early summer. The show is shot in Vancouver, British Colombia, so the cast's social media should clue us in to when production has resumed.
Season 1 of the hit show premiered on September 25, 2017. We can expect a similar air date for season 2.
As The Good Doctor is produced by Sony Television Pictures, its UK home is currently Sky Living. The show hit UK screens about a month after its US premiere (October 27, 2017), so we can expect the same for season 2.
The Good Doctor season will likely air on Sky Living in late October 2018.

In April, ABC announced that Fiona Gubelmann (Dr. Reznick), Will Yun Lee (Dr. Park), Christina Chang (Dr. Lim), and Paige Spara (Lea) had been bumped to series regular status for the upcoming season. Paige Spara's series regular promotion indicates that Shaun's love interest, Lea, will be back for good.
Chuku Modu (Dr. Kalu) has exited the series for now, as his character received a job offer at another hospital. As of now, it appears the other doctors we have grown to love will return for the season 2.
Obviously, our doctors will be dealing with a lot in season 2. Dr. Kalu's departure will surely be addressed, as well as Dr. Reznick's unyielding ambition.
Dr. Glassman's cancer prognosis is more promising thanks to a biopsy, but Shaun will likely have difficulty adjusting to his mentor's failing health.
The main plot point that fans are eager to resolve is the outcome of Dr. Murphy and Dr. Andrews' conversation at the end of season 1. Shaun insisted that he could not lie to Dr. Andrews about his nearly life-threatening surgical error, and fans will likely learn of the talented young doctor's fate early in season 2.
Seeing as Highmore toplines the series, he will obviously not be exiting. However, fans can expect professional consequences for Dr. Shaun Murphy.
