"It’s 2019 and Kylie Jenner is hosting a “Handmaid’s Tale” themed birthday party." Kylie Jenner faces social media backlash after throwing a party based on Hulu's "The Handmaid's Tale".
Kylie Jenner threw a Handmaid's Tale themed birthday party for her good friend Stassie Karanikolaou and the internet has some thoughts. The 21-year-old billionaire beauty mogul is being criticised on social media after sharing videos and photos from her recent Handmaid's Tale themed party.
In a video posted to her Instagram Stories, Kylie called The Handmaid's Tale her "favourite show ever" while walking into party themed around the popular series. The Hulu series is based on the Margaret Atwood novel of the same name, and depicts a dystopian world where fertile women are oppressed, raped, and forced to bear children for powerful men.
In Kylie's Handmaid's Tale party videos, she and her friends dress in the red robes and white bonnets that fans of the show will instantly recognise. The reality star also served "praised be vodka" and "under his eye tequila" at the event.
Some called the theme "tone-deaf" and "disheartening".

Kylie Jenner throwing her friend a Handmaid’s Tale themed birthday party complete with robes, Gilead flags, “Praised be” vodka and “Under his eye” tequila is so tone deaf, at any time, but especially when women’s rights and autonomy are particularly under attack. Disheartening.

A retailer selling sexy Handmaid's Tale costumes last year faced similar backlash, after people branded it "deeply inappropriate" considering the show's subject matter.
The red robes and white bonnets depicted in The Handmaid's Tale have come to be used as a symbol of protest in recent years. Wired recently called it the "viral protest uniform of 2019".
