IT Chapter Three: Bill Skarsgård and director Andy Muschietti up for Pennywise prequel

A film about the origins of Pennywise? I would like to see IT!

Well, it's over - or is it? Following the release of IT: Chapter Two, it pretty much seems like the Losers' club is officially done and dusted when it comes to this particular on-screen adaptation.

Given that the films follow the narrative of Stephen King's original book and end where the book ends, the ending of Chapter Two is pretty final. There's no more. It's over. It's done. Peace out, Derry... It's been real.

However, director Andy Muschietti and Pennywise himself Bill Skarsgård have been toying with the idea of returning to that world and bringing a third movie to the screen. But while it likely won't feature any of the Losers' Club, it could be one that dives into the mythology and the origins of IT itself.

Will there be an IT: Chapter Three?

Speaking to EW ahead of the release of IT: Chapter Two, Skarsgård revealed that he's totally down to bring Pennywise back, but it needs to be under the right circumstances.

“It would have to be the right type of approach to it,” he said. “The book ends where the second movie ends, so that is the final chapter of this story. There is this interesting aspect of going back in time before all this happened. There might be a story there that might be worth exploring."

"Obviously that would be a story that’s not in the book, it would be a freestanding story, but obviously within the same universe. So, there might be something interesting out of it. I think it would be fun.”

In both the book and in the film, it's said that IT came to Earth millions of years ago and has been rearing his terrifying ass every 27 years to wreak havoc ever since. In an interview with io9, director Muschietti also seemed to agree with Skarsgård's response, pointing out that there's a long, long mythology and history to the story that could be worth exploring in the future.

“Mythology is something that always has opportunities to explore. It has been on Earth for millions of years. He’s been in contact with humans for hundreds of years, every 27 years. So you can imagine the amount of material,” Muschietti said.

“It’s always exciting to think of eventually exploring this mythology. It’s very exciting. But, for now, there’s nothing on the table.”

So, what do you reckon... another IT film in the future? IT: The Prologue, Pennywise Origins, A Star Is Born but the 'star' is Pennywise? Maybe I would like to see it.
