The film is a direct prequel to the 2008 monster movie Cloverfield and explains how the creature that terrorised New York came to earth.
Featuring an all-star cast including Elizabeth Debicki, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, David Oyelowo and Chris O'Dowd, plus direction from Julius Onah, the announcement sent fans into a frenzy with memes and reactions pouring in as sci-fi fans dived on the latest installment in the franchise.
Here are some of the best reactions we have seen so far:
Woman of color-led, sci-fi thriller released worldwide day + date w/ big Netflix muscle for black director, his super producer + POC cast. No advance press, ads, trailer. Straight to the people. Gamechanger. Congrats to helmer #JuliusOnah + my dears JJ, Gugu, David. #Cloverfield pic.twitter.com/m186Hprhqz
