Miguel Responds To Twitter Reaction Over Black People Comments - Video

31 May 2013, 09:21

The 'Beautiful' singer says he stands by his comments but think people misunderstood what he meant.

Miguel has clarified his recent comments about black people after causing controversy for calling them "the most judgemental people", and insists his remarks were taken out of context.

The 'Adorn' singer faced a backlash earlier this week when he responded to people attacking him on Twitter by posting a tweet that read: "I'm proud of my heritage, but honestly black people are the most judgemental people in the world".

Miguel has now opened up to Capital FM about the controversy his tweet has caused and says he stands by his opinion still.

Watch Miguel talking to Capital FM presenter Max about his infamous tweet below:

"What's really interesting about that is that, the responses are both for and against that opinion," Miguel revealed to Capital FM presenter Max this week. "A lot of black people were like, 'You're absolutely right', and a lot of people were offended by it.

"I stand by my opinion, and I think what people do is take things out of context," he explained. "Obviously, I don't mean every single black person is more [judgemental'.

"I think intelligent people know exactly what I mean," Miguel continued. "I'm not saying anyone who disagrees with me is not intelligent, at all.

"What I'm saying is there is obviously context around that. No I don't people that all black people are ignorant or super-judgemental.

"Actually, a lot of my friends who are black are not judgmental and are very open-minded and forward-thinking," he explained. "I'm just saying, overall, I think we can be the most [judgemental' of ourselves".

Miguel went on to say that his heritage means he knows how "we can tear each other down" and admits he has often been guilty of the same behaviour.

Miguel also opened up about his Billboard Awards 2013 performance earlier this month, including the incident where he accidentally landed on a female fan while performing a stage dive.

You can hear Miguel's full interview with Max this Sunday (2nd June) from 7pm on Capital.
