The 'Stayin' Alive' singer has passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Bee Gees star Robin Gibb has died at the age of 62, the singer-songwriter's family announced late yesterday (20th May).

The 'Night Fever' singer has suffered from ill health in recent years, having been diagnosed with cancer of the colon and the liver in 2011, and Robin was hospitalised again earlier this year.

"The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery," Gibb's family said in a statement released to the press. "The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time."

Robin formed popular disco trio Bee Gees in 1958 alongside his brothers Barry and Maurice, and together the band have sold over 200 million sales worldwide with hits like 'Stayin' Alice', 'We Should Be Dancing' and 'How Deep Is Your Love'.

Maurice Gibb died in 2003 following complications arising from a twisted intestine, leaving singer Barry Gibb as the only surviving member of the hugely popular band.
