2012 has been the year of Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson – aka One Direction. Capital looks back at the band's highlights of the year.
Harry, Niall, Liam, Louis and Zayn's complete their first UK tour, and performed in cities like Manchester, Dublin and Bournemouth.
The band hit America to continue their world domination as the opening act for boy band 'Big Time Rush', and appeared on TV programmes like The Today Show.
The boys beat the year's other biggest tracks, including Adele's 'Someone like You' and Jessie J's 'Price Tag' to scoop the Best British Single award as voted by Capital FM listeners for their catchy tune 'What Makes You Beautiful'. UK Rapper Tinie Tempah presented them with the award.
The boys were captured on film during the band’s first sold out tour early in 2012. The DVD has sold over one million copies worldwide and topped the charts in twenty-five countries.
The boys sing 'What Makes You Beautiful' with an estimated four billion people worldwide watching them at the Olympics Closing Ceremony. Louis described it as one of "the best nights of his life".

The catchy tune stayed in the charts for six weeks. The boys filmed the video, which sees them splashing around in a paddling pool, in Kent. Upon release, the video broke the Vevo record for having the most views in a 24-hour period (8.24 million).
The group took home best new artist, best pop video and most share-worthy video, and performed 'One Thing'. Niall also stole a cheeky kiss from Katy Perry.
The boys become immortalised as 33cm tall plastic toy dolls, each one uniquely designed to capture the essence of the band member, just in time for Christmas.
The number one album, featuring hit singles 'Live While We're Young' and 'Little Things', sold over 500,000 copies in its first week.

In the eighth episode of Season Four, cast members from the popular US sitcom Glee perform a cover of One Direction's number one track, performing various boyband moves throughout.
Ed Sheeran, who wrote 'Little Things' when he was a teenager, gave the track to the boys when they admitted they really liked it when hearing it in the studio. It's a slower tune than the band's usual pop sound and reached number three in the Vodafone Big Top 40.
Due to incredible demand, a further six dates have been added to 1D’s Arena tour next year, kicking off in February 2013. They'll be playing at cities including Sheffield, Newcastle and London's O2 Arena.

The teen heartthrobs topped the image search charts on Google, came sixth in a "most-talked about" poll on Facebook and have hit over 100 million streams on music streaming service Spotify.
Filming has begun for the band's very own 3D movie, which Harry Styles reveals will let "fans to see a bit more in-depth side of us". Niall will be involved in filming parts of the movie.
MTV said the fivesome is “the clear choice for the top spot” after a massive year for the boy band. Louis Tomlinson called the award "the icing on the cake".
