Katy Perry Named MTV's Artist Of The Year 2011

The 'Teenage Dream' singer has been honoured for the success of her second album and worldwide tour over the course of the last year.

MTV has named Katy Perry as their Artist of the Year for her wide variety of accomplishments in 2011.

The 'California Gurls' singer was praised for scoring five number one sings and six top five hits on the Billboard Top 100 over the course of the year, matching records set by the likes of Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson and George Michael in the process.

"To be Artist of the Year, a whole 365 days, that's pretty cool," Katy told MTV News. "I wasn't really allowed to watch MTV growing up, so this feels really validating.

"I've had a fantastic year, a great tour and a great run, and you guys have been so a part of it and such a big reason why. I really appreciate it."

Katy also embarked on the 124-date 'California Dreams' tour which launched in January and has seen the singer perform across five different continents.

The 'Teenage Dream' singer also worked her way into other areas of the industry in 2011 after taking a voice-acting role in summer film The Smurgs and guest-hosting anepisode of US sketch show Saturday Night Live.

"Wow! Artist of the Year x2! Thanks @MTVNews and @popdust!" Katy tweeted, after receiving the honour.

Katy Perry has said she will spend more time with her family in 2012 and wants to take a break before beginning work on her third studio album.
