A new Scarlett Johansson interview has sparked controversy and memes.
Scarlett Johansson has caused controversy with new casting comments and it's inspired the funniest tree memes.
It's no secret that Scarlett Johansson has taken on a few problematic roles in her career as an actress. From playing the lead in Ghost in a Shell (Motoko Kusanagi is a famous Japanese anime character) to announcing a future part as a trans man in a now cancelled film called Rub & Tug (Scarlett pulled out after receiving backlash), her film choices aren't always popular.
Now Scarlett is perplexing the internet again with some bizarre comments about what she wants to play next.
Speaking to As If magazine, Scarlett said: "You know, as an actor I should be allowed to play any person, or any tree, or any animal because that is my job and the requirements of my job." Um. Okay... She then went on to say: "I feel like itβs a trend in my business and it needs to happen for various social reasons, yet there are times it does get uncomfortable when it affects the art because I feel art should be free of restrictions."
Given Scarlett's history, people are confused as to why she still believes she is entitled to play any person. Minorities, which include Asian people and trans people, are rarely given leading roles in Hollywood so it's important that when there are roles made for them specifically, they get the opportunity to play them. That and the fact that Scarlett somehow brought TREES (!!!) into the equation has inspired hilarious memes roasting her response.
lmao scarlett johansson was asked about giving up that trans role and then immediately jumped to comparing playing different gender identities/ethnicities to... animals and trees? ok hun pic.twitter.com/UjtmvGruEt

Leave Rocket and Groot alone.
Honestly, and I know this isn't the point, but there are several trees I don't think Scarlett Johansson could play convincingly.

Is she a deciduous or evergreen kind of tree?
I also agree that Scarlett Johansson should play a tree because she has the range of a piece of wood https://t.co/or46ZGAL3P

...we need to log off.
Since the comments came out, Scarlett has released a statement to Variety. In it she says: "An interview that was recently published has been edited for click bait and is widely taken out of context. The question I was answering in my conversation with the contemporary artist, David Salle, was about the confrontation between political correctness and art."
She then said: βI personally feel that, in an ideal world, any actor should be able to play anybody and Art, in all forms, should be immune to political correctness. That is the point I was making, albeit didnβt come across that way.β
Scarlett ended the statement saying: "I recognize that in reality, there is a wide spread discrepancy amongst my industry that favors Caucasian, cis gendered actors and that not every actor has been given the same opportunities that I have been privileged to. I continue to support, and always have, diversity in every industry and will continue to fight for projects where everyone is included.β
