Maybe this article is a cake and we'll never know.

Meme Twitter has been busier than ever over the past four months, thanks to the disappearance of Chanel the African Grey parrot, Tiger King, the Sue Sylvester renaissance and Animal Crossing New Horizons.

Now, thanks to a viral compilation video about cakes, we have entered a new phase of the 2020 meme cycle. The completely ridiculous, existential crisis phase of the meme cycle, if you will. Friends, please welcome to the stage... Cake memes.

Where did the 'Made of Cake' meme come from?

It all started when BuzzFeed's Tasty shared a video compilation of a series of cakes (made by @redrosecake_tubageckil) that all look like genuine household objects. Crocs, plant pots, toilet paper, a soap dispenser... you name it. But once cut into, they reveal themselves to be actual, edible cakes.

The video soon went viral, with people replying underneath with other various compilations of absolutely wild realistic cake designs, as well as attempting to cut into various objects, like a box of tissues, to see if they are in fact cakes...

From there, Twitter then descended into chaos. If these random objects are actually cakes in disguise, then what else could be a cake in disguise?

Cue the trust issues in 3, 2, 1...

Are we... Are we all just cakes in disguise?

I'm a cake. You're a cake. WE'RE ALL CAKES.

You think you really know someone and then suddenly... they're a cake.

Not being funny but this blows every other Great British Bake Off Showstopper out of the water.

Imagine falling in love and then it turns out they're a cake.

Am I a cake? Am EYE a cake? (Yes, yes I am.)

Even Lil Nas X is in on the great cake conspiracy of 2020.

Just getting confirmation from NASA that Mars has just been classified as a cake planet.

I'm never going to be able to open my fridge in peace ever again.

This has to be a crime, surely?

I've never been so disappointed to see this much money in my life. Was looking forward to a multicoloured layer pig-shaped cake.

Bong Joon-ho was ahead of his time when he made Parasite.

The rest of the Avengers were still in 2018 while Thor was in 3018.

But what if the knife is also a cake? A cake that also cuts cakes?

Sounds like the kind of thing a cake would say...

And so, in conclusion...

(P.S. Don't do this.)
