Where The Money Goes

This year Capital Rocks is supporting groundbreaking research to develop better, kinder treatments for children with cancer.

-->--> Although overall survival for children’s cancers is high, there is still so much more to do. Every young person who loses their life to cancer is still one too many and we cannot forget that, and for those who survive, the road to recovery is not an easy one.

Around 1 in 500 children under the age of fifteen in the UK develop cancer. That’s around 31 children diagnosed every week. Cancer remains the most common cause of death from disease in children in the UK with around 250 losing their battle each year.

Research has transformed the outlook for many types of childhood cancer, but for certain types, such as some bone cancers and brain tumours, progress has been much slower and the outlook is much bleaker.  Also, we must not forget the devastating impact that cancer and treatment has on many of the children who do survive, and how difficult it is for everyone involved. Childhood cancer may result in both physical and psychological problems that affect survivors' long-term quality of life.

Some young people spend months, even years of their young lives in hospital enduring intensive treatment and being away from home, family, school and friends. Research has shown that many young people suffer life altering consequences from their treatment, including second cancers, damage to organs(including their hearts and lungs), problems with speech and mobility, infertility, deafness and permanent hair loss.

Despite these shocking statistics, vital progress IS being made to find better, kinder treatments and save more young people’s lives.  These innovative new treatments give real hope to families and children with cancer across the UK, with many of the 33,000 survivors of children’s cancer alive today owing their lives to these breakthroughs.

-->--> The money raised at this year's Capital Rocks will help to bring these new treatments to children with cancer across the UK through the work of the JLS Foundation. Together we can help to bring forward the day when all children with cancer are cured AND to ensure a higher quality of life for all young cancer survivors so they can go on to live normal, healthy and fulfilled lives without physical or psychological side effects.

Thank you.
