The 'Cry Me A River' singer admits he pursued his fiancé "the old fashioned way" as he opens up on their relationship.

Justin Timberlake has confessed that he was forced to work hard in getting a first date with fiancé Jessica Biel but his "persistence" paid off.

The 'Sexy Back' star admitted that he went about dating the Hollywood star the "old fashioned way", paying tribute to the lessons in love he's learned from his stepdad and grandfather.

"I did it the old fashioned way, by telephone," he told a press conference with the Hollywood Foreign Press. "That's something I learned from both my stepdad and my grandfather, that there is a thing called chivalry and it doesn't have to die with the birth of the internet."

He continued: "The way I see it, if you're asking a girl out on a date, it's only right to do it in a way that she can hear your voice. I had to be pretty persistent in order to get her to say yes. But I have a fair amount of tenacity and if I want something I stick to it. And in the end she agreed."

The singer turned actor also revealed the secret to making the pair's relationship work.

"I answer to a higher power now," he joked. "We have a couple of rules in our relationship. The first rule is that I make her feel like she's getting everything. The second rule is that I actually do let her have her way in everything. And, so far, it's working."

Although he wouldn't divulge on the details of his forthcoming wedding, he did speak about his expectations of married life.

"I think it's important to remember that you go into something like marriage knowing that you don't know very much about it at all," he said. "But I do look at the marriage of my mother and stepdad, and what makes it work for them is that it's a team effort."

He added: "Some days are better than other days for all of us and if we have our good days and bad days individually, and then we're dealing with someone else's good and bad days on top of that, it's going to add up.

"My mother is a ball of fire in the world and I love that about her. But what I have learned from my stepdad is something as important, which is patience and compassion. Because when you are living with someone else, those two qualities go a long way."

Justin was recently pictured in Las Vegas and Mexico alongside 20 other friends on his stag do.

The couple were reported to have married in secret earlier this summer, something which was quickly denied by the star's representatives.
