Help a Capital Child Week 2013

This year's Help a Capital Child Week has raised £109,152 to support young people living with cancer!

THANK YOU to everyone who made a donation, entered one of our text raffles, bid in one of our auctions, or joined us at one of our events.

It was all to raise money to make a difference to the lives of teenagers whose world changes overnight when they are told they have cancer.

Teenage Cancer TrustWhen you’re a teenager, life should be all about hanging out with your mates, going to gigs and experiencing whatever life has to offer for the first time. Sadly for six teenagers a day, when they are given the devastating news that they have cancer, they find themselves placed on a children’s ward or with elderly patients, leaving them feeling isolated and alone.

Money raised during Help a Capital Child Week will be used to fund specialist Teenage Cancer Trust units in hospitals across the country, which are specifically designed to make life a bit better for these teenagers. They can share their experience with people of a similar age, and the environment is designed to allow them to still be a teenager despite everything they are going through. Teenagers like Hannah & Will:

In South Wales there is a unit like this at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

Through support from Help a Capital Child so far, we've helped to pay for the specialist support and care young people deserve when they’re staying at this unit. Young people like Charlie;

Charlie who was 16 when he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. He was shocked and scared at first. He received his treatment on Teenage Cancer Trust’s unit in Cardiff which really helped him.

He says: “The  unit  is  brilliant  and  I’ve  made  some  great  friends  so  I  have  company  when  I’m  in  for weeks at a time. But I also love that the unit is so welcoming to my friends and family when they come to visit me. Thanks to Teenage Cancer Trust, my normal life hasn’t stopped.”
