A teenager is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after the car she was in hit and killed a New Forest pony.

At around 11.15pm on Wednesday 6 July, a silver Volkswagen Polo traveling on the A35 from Hinton towards Holmsley collided with the pony.

An 18-year-old woman from Brockenhurst, who was a passenger in the car, suffered life threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to hospital where she is currently receiving treatment. Her next of kin have been informed.

The driver, an 18-year-old woman from Sway - and another 18-year-old woman who was a passenger in the car - were not injured.

The New Forest pony died at the scene of the collision.

It is believed the pony had escaped onto the road through an insecure gate that may have been left open by a member of the public.

Road closures were put in place while the incident was dealt with and these were lifted at 5.15am on Thursday, July 7.

Anyone who witnessed this collision should contact the Roads Policing Unit at Totton police station by calling 101 and quoting Operation Plain.
