New Southampton Arts Complex Planned

Plans have been submitted for a new £21 million arts complex in Southampton.

The developers, Grosvenor, say the plans for the old Tyrell and Green site, which include a theatre, restaurants and shops, will create more than 300 jobs.

The scheme covers over 100,000 square foot and it intended to be a major addition to the Cultural Quarter. They’re hoping it will attract tens of thousands of people to the city every year.

Grosvenor signed an agreement with Southampton City Council earlier this year and has been working with them to develop a proposal for the scheme, which will be arranged around the revamped Guildhall Square.

Alex Robinson, development manager at Grosvenor, said:

“We have worked closely with Southampton City Council over the past few months to ensure that we submit a proposal that combines outstanding design and exceptional leisure facilities. If we are successful in the planning process, we aim to be on site early next year with shell completions scheduled for 2013”.

Councillor Royston Smith, Leader of Southampton City Council said:

“I know residents are as excited as I am that the development of the arts complex is progressing. It will be a place in the Cultural Quarter where all the arts can thrive and will draw in tens of thousands of visitors every year. Despite the current financial climate, we continue to attract investment and create vital new jobs for our residents.”

Jimmy Chestnutt, Chief Executive of Hampshire Chamber of Commerce said:

"The Chamber is very pleased to see further progress with the implementation of the Cultural Quarter. The submission of the planning application for the new arts complex is a significant step. The development promises to be a major icon for the city on a key site. The Chamber has lobbied for the regeneration of the former Tyrrell and Green site for a number of years and is pleased to support the planning proposals that are submitted".

The plans include 6 restaurant units, 29 flats, and a new arts venue containing studio and creation space for the performing arts, an art gallery and film/media facilities.
