Police are appealing for witnesses to a collision on the A3M at Bedhampton at 6.23am on Wednesday December the 14th.
A black Ford Mondeo travelling Westbound on the A27 at Farlington Marshes hit the central reservation.
The two people inside weren't hurt, and they got out of the vehicle and stood on the central reservation to wait for help.
Then a taxi crashed into the Mondeo. The driver, a 44-year-old man, got out of his car to check the damage, and he was then hit by a white Ford Transit van.
A fourth vehicle, a red Mercedes Vito, then collided with the central reservation in an effort to avoid the main collision.
The taxi driver sustained serious life-changing injuries and was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham, where he remains.
A 49-year-old man, a passenger in the taxi, sustained minor injuries and was also taken to QA for assessment.
The driver of the van, a 30-year-old man from Havant, was arrested.
The road was closed until 11.15am to allow for the vehicles to be recovered and collision investigators to examine the scene.
Meanwhile, officers are also investigating a ten-vehicle crash on the A3M at Waterlooville which happened about an hour later at 7.12am on the northbound carriageway.
The cars involved were: a black Saab, silver Nissan Almera, blue Renault Laguna, white Volkswagen panel van, a silver Vauxhall Astravan, a white Vauxhall van, a blue Ford Mondeo, blue Peugeot 206, a blue Toyota Corolla and a silver Vauxhall Astra,
The driver of the white Vauxhall van, a 36-year-old man from the Southampton area, was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital with suspected serious injuries. It has now been confirmed that his injuries are less serious than first suspected.
The driver of the Peugeot, a 23-year-old woman from Waterlooville sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Police are appealing for any witnesses to either crash to call 101.
