Scots Want To Share A Whisky With Bond

James Bond actor Sean Connery has beaten tennis star Andy Murray to be named the Scot we'd would like to share a dram with, according to a poll.

Sir Sean, 84, won the majority of votes in a YouGov survey of more than 2,000 people.

Mary Queen of Scots was the second most popular drinking partner, followed by ex Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson and inventor of the telephone Alexander Graham Bell.

Wimbledon champion Murray had to settle for joint fifth place alongside William Wallace and Scotland's national Bard Robert Burns.

Former First Minister Alex Salmond, meanwhile, tied for bottom place with Britain's Got Talent singer Susan Boyle in the poll by organisers of the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival.

Britons were also asked which famous person - Scottish or not - they would like to share a whisky with - Winston Churchill took the top honour.

Stephen Fry and Elvis Presley were the runners-up, with votes also going to David Beckham, Jesus and Ukip leader Nigel Farage.

More people opted to have a dram with Margaret Thatcher than the Queen while Prince Harry and the Duke of Edinburgh were found to be equally popular choices as drinking partners.

YouGov questioned 2,157 adults in an online poll between January 16 and 19,  of whom 290 were resident in Scotland.

Festival chairman James Campbell said: "Sir Sean may be more accustomed to picking up awards and being recognised for his acting, but I hope that he will be delighted with this slightly more unusual honour.''

The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival takes place from April 30 to May 4, with tickets available at www.spiritofspeyside.com from Tuesday.
