An elderly man has died after a fire broke out in his home in Renfrewshire.

The 92-year-old was reportedly found with serious burns in his garden by neighbours who tried to dampen the flames.

He was taken to hospital from the fire in Russell Place, Linwood, on Sunday but later died.

Police said inquiries are continuing but the fire is not thought to be suspicious.

Fire officer Graeme Binning said: "A man has sadly died following a house fire in Linwood on Sunday February 4.

"The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to reports of a fire at the two-storey property on Russell Place at 4.58pm.

"Operations control immediately mobilised three appliances to the scene.

"A male casualty was passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service but sadly passed away a short time later."
