Police have been given more time to question a man over a sexual assault on a woman at a Nottingham park.

The 19-year-old man was arrested after officers patrolling Forest Recreation Ground area found the 22-year-old woman just after 4am on Saturday 10 December.

She had serious facial injuries and was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre, where on Sunday she had facial surgery, she now remains in a stable condition. Her family are with her.

Prior to the assault, she was walking alone along Mansfield Road on her way home after a night out with friends in the city centre.

At approximately 3.30am she crossed the junction with Mapperley Road. Officers believe that a short time later, at the entrance to the recreation ground, she was taken into a flowerbed and subjected to a violent sexual assault.

A cordon put in place at the scene of the incident has now been removed, but house-to-house enquiries are continuing in the area.

Police would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the assault, or who saw anyone in the area at the time who they believe may have been connected to the incident.

Anyone with information which may assist the investigation is asked to contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
