A pensioner is being treated in hospital for serious head injuries after he was attacked by a man who stole his car in West Bromwich.

The 78-year-old was moving his car into a gated drive on Chapel Street, at around 9.20pm on Sunday when the attacker, who is believed to have been lying in wait, jumped into the car and drove off.

The victim tried to stop the thief but was knocked backwards as the car hit him and was left injured on the floor after being thrown against a wall by the force of the collision.

The thief drove off in the man's light blue Peugeot 207, which has the registration BK60LXN.

DC James Ashcroft, from Sandwell Police investigation team, said: "The elderly victim was rushed to hospital where he is being treated for serious head injuries.

"We are yet to trace the stolen Peugeot and urge people to keep an eye out for it in the local area.

"We believe it will have some damage to the front and rear end as it collided with the victim and a wall before driving off.''

The offender is believed to be a man who is over 6ft tall and of stocky build, who was seen in the area near the junction of Chapel Street and Old Meeting Street at around 9pm.

Anyone with information to help the police investigation is asked to call Sandwell Police on 101 or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
