A crash involving eight vehicles closed the A1 in North Yorkshire.
The pile-up happened on the southbound carriageway near Dishforth around 6.30pm.
North Yorkshire Police said a number of people were taken to hospital for treatment, but no-one had suffered life-threatening injuries.
Debris strewn across the three lanes meant police had to close the A1 for several hours while it was cleared.
Chief Inspector Mark Khan said: "We don't know the full details of why the accident happened, but we do know it was not due to inclement weather.
The road conditions were dry at the time.''
He said the injured were taken to hospital in Harrogate or to Leeds General Infirmary.
