Welsh sixth formers question Nick Clegg

One hundred excited students gathered at the University of South Wales in Newport today to hold a mock NATO summit.

Ten schools from across England and Wales met today to replicate some of the debates by NATO's world leaders.

The idea is to give young people an insight into international issues.

Among some of the topics were the Islamic State movements and global stability.

Julie Lydon is Vice chancellor of the University she says...

'It is to help them have a better understanding of the world.

It's to engage them with the debate and discussion so actually they as future decision makers are learning at quite a young age about what is going on and how leaders get to compromise and how they make decisions.'

Duffryn High School in Newport and Treorchy Comprehensive were there.

Each school had a designated country to represent in the debates.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and AM Dame Rosemary Butler took questions from the students.

Doctor Bella Arora from the University teaches about Global Governance she says...

'We often think students aren't interested in politics but obviously when you touch upon issues that mean alot to them it's a different story.

They can recognise suffering and they don't want to live in a world of conflict.'

The day gave students a firsthand opportunity to express their views for their future.
