More People In Wales Calling Samaritans

Charity Samaritans says someone in Wales called their helpline every three minutes last year

The organisation has launched its Impact Report this morning, outlining the work of the nine branches based across the country.

According to the latest figures, the service was contacted 161,170 by people who are struggling to cope.

Minister for Health and Social Services, Mark Drakeford, said:

" We want people to feel able to support their friends, family members and colleagues who, for a variety of reasons, may be at risk of suicide."

" Ultimately, we as individuals, colleagues or friends, all have a responsibility to listen to and support those close to us"

Along with the Impact Report, Samaritans have released figures on the number of volunteers.

In Wales there were 691, contributing to 21,200 across the UK and Ireland.

The charity says while volunteer numbers reached a 10 year high, the number of calls answered was at its highest for five years.
