Police Release CCTV After Sex Attack

Detectives from Southampton’s Major Crime Department are today releasing a CCTV image of a man they think could be an important witness to a sex attack on a man in the city.

The incident happened sometime between around 5.10am and 5.35am on, Saturday, October 1.

A 22-year-old man was walking along a path near the Clover Nook flats off Old Redbridge Road when he was approached by another man he did not know. The man says the man then raped him before running away into the Clover Nook flats minutes later.

*He was wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans, and white trainers and had a tribal design tattoo.

*He was white and around 5ft 8inches in height with short hair.

A witness appeal was put out by police at the time and house to house enquiries carried out. Since then detectives from the Major Crime Department have been working on the case, following up lines of enquiry and piecing together information.

They are now in a position to release the CCTV image of a man they think may be a valuable witness.

Detective Sergeant Bryan Carter said:

“The image we are releasing is of a man seen on the CCTV from the Shell Garage on Millbrook Road justbefore the Redbridge flyover at around 5.11am on Saturday the 1st of October. He is not considered a suspect in any way but was in the area at the time that the victim was dropped off in a taxi prior to the attack in Clover Nook.

Do you know this man?

“It may be that he saw something or someone in the area and we’d very much like to speak to him. He is white and was wearing a top with either blue or green stripes.

“I would urge him or anyone who knows who he is to get in contact with us as he may be able to help us solve this crime and I would mention once again he is not a suspect so has nothing to worry about by speaking to us.”

The man in the photo or anyone else with information about the crime is asked to call the Operation Stopford Team at Hulse Road on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
