A male pedestrian's been killed after being hit by a lorry on the A1(M) near Newton Aycliffe.
Police believe it happened at about 3:20am on the southbound carriageway between junctions 59 and 58 near Newton Aycliffe in County Durham.
A driver travelling southbound called the police and reported having to swerve to miss a pedestrian walking along the inside lane.
The A1(M) was closed for more than five hours between Aycliffe and Burtree but has reopened.
The male driver of the Volvo articulated lorry, from Bishop Auckland, was travelling southbound on lane one of the A1(M) one mile north of Junction 58.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
