Parents Don't Value Apprenticeships

The study by The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) found more than half of parents in the region were surprised to know that employers rated young people with Higher Apprenticeships as 25% more employable than graduates.

More surprisingly, 83% of parents here didn't know that Higher Apprenticeships offer the same level of qualification as a degree.

It also found a third of parents don't believe apprenticeships will become as normal for young people as going to university.

A record number of people are applying for apprenticeships in the North East - with the biggest rise in Middlesbrough where 17 people are applying per vacancy.

The biggest increases in apprenticeship vacancies were in vehicle sales, the power industry, clinical healthcare support, advanced engineering construction and leisure management
