A man's been arrested after a gun was found in Manchester city centre
Shortly before 11am on Wednesday 30 November 2011, an officer in the city received information that something had been discarded on West Mosley Street by a man.
Officers attended and recovered a handgun.
A man was arrested on Oldham Street a short time later on suspicion of possessing a firearm and class A drugs.
He remains in police custody for questioning.
Inquiries are continuing.
Chief Superintendent Ian Wiggett, said: “Due to the rapid response of my officers in the city centre we have quickly responded to this incident, recovered a firearm and made an arrest.
“I want to stress that we do not believe that this is connected in any way to the ongoing protest but I have no doubt that whoever discarded the gun did so after seeing the large number of officers currently on duty in the area.
“This incident reflects our ability to deal with the protests in the city and around the force while responding to and dealing with serious criminal offences.”
