A man needed more than 150 stitches after he was slashed three times in the face.

A man needed more than 150 stitches after he was slashed three times in the face.

The attack happened when the man, 26, and his brother had gone out to buy cigarettes from the Shell Garage on Kingsway, Burnage.

Between midnight and 1.30am on 12 November 2011, the brothers were walking along Kingsway were jumped from behind by a group of men they did not know and the victim's brother was forced to the ground where he was repeatedly punched and kicked.

The main victim was then slashed three times across the cheek and neck with a weapon, leaving him with cuts that needed more than 150 stitches to close.

He also needed an operation to treat his injuries.

Police are now appealing to anyone with information to come forward.

Detective Constable Neil Tate, from West Didsbury CID, said: "Neither the victim or his brother can think of any reason why they have been jumped, so we are treating this as a totally motiveless attack.  The level of violence the offenders displayed was extraordinary.  I would appeal to anyone with information to come forward. I particularly want to hear from anyone who witnessed the attack to call us. I also want to make a direct appeal to any of the men who may have been present but were not directly involved in the attack. If you were, and you know you were just a bystander, then please do the right thing and come forward and give this man something as he comes to terms with this appalling attack."
