Police in Southampton are appealing for witnesses after a 22-year-old woman was sexually assaulted by a man as she walked home from a night out.
She made her way along Bedford Place sometime between 1.20 and 2am on Monday May 7. She then turned into Wilton Avenue where two young men made admiring comments to her which she ignored.
As she walked further down the road she was grabbed by the arm and pulled into a front garden of a house or possibly an alleyway. There she was sexually assaulted by a man who then stopped and walked back down Wilton Avenue towards Hill Lane.
The man who carried out the attack is described as: White, 6 foot 1 inches tall, and slim. I was wearing a grey hooded top, with a white zip, he also had a dark coloured jacket or top over the top of the grey hooded top.
Officers are now appealing for witnesses. I
t’s known there were lots of people in the area at that time and it’s thought likely some of these people may have seen what happened or the man involved.
Officers are also keen to speak to the two young men who made complimentary comments to the women as she went past them at the junction of Bedford Place and Wilton Avenue as it’s likely they are important witnesses.
They are asking them or anyone else who may have seen what happened to contact them.
Officers are also advising people - where possible - to always walk home at night with friends.
They should call the Western Area CID Team at Southampton Central Police Station on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
